Always a bit nerve-wracking, because there is no guarantee that they will still in one piece when they come out of the kiln.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;font-style: normal\">Luckily there is one technique you can use to minimise that risk: the so-called <strong>&#8216;<em>slip and score&#8217;<\/em>method.<\/strong> We explain step by step how it works.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aaf3efd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"aaf3efd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h1 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Step 1: Check both components<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca9361e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ca9361e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Attaching different pieces of clay together is actually easiest <strong>when the clay is still wet<\/strong>. But that makes it tricky, because then it&#8217;s very easy to accidentally warp your two components.<\/p>\n<p>This is why many potters let the clay dry first, <strong>until it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.cursist-courses.com\/woordenlijst\/#lederhard\">leather-hard<\/a><\/strong>. An ideal consistency is when the clay no longer warps when you pick it up, but you can still change its shape with some effort.<\/p>\n<p>The most important part is <strong>that both clay components are at the same stage of drying<\/strong>. If they&#8217;re not, then one component will dry faster than the other component. And that often leads to cracks.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b8bed2b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b8bed2b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Step 2: Prepare both components<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-33f078c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"33f078c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Decide where exactly you want to attach the two pieces. Make sure everything fits together correctly, and then make<strong> a small mark<\/strong> in the spots where the components will touch.<\/p>\n<p>Make a few <strong>parallel scratches<\/strong> in the spots you&#8217;ve marked, with a sharp tool or with a serrated rib. How liquid your clay slip should be, depends on what you&#8217;re working on.<\/p>\n<p>For clay that is still quite wet, you&#8217;re better off using a rather liquid clay slip. For rather dry clay it&#8217;s better to use a slightly thicker clay slip. In that last case, make sure to add the clay slip to both components. That will give you a stronger hold.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b3308d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0b3308d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Step 4: Assemble the components<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed5ed57 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ed5ed57\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Join the clay components together. It&#8217;s possible that some excess clay slip appears around the joint. You can easily smooth it out and blend it with the rest of the clay. You can use a damp sponge to do this.<\/p>\n<p>To strengthen the joint even further, you can also roll out a bit of clay into a small coil and attach it around the joint. <strong>Make sure to smooth out the clay from the coil<\/strong> and blend it with the rest of the clay.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many pottery projects, you need to attach two clay components to each other.
